The Fenwick-to-Dewey crab run, August 2026: what closed, what opened, what's left
Delaware's lower beach towns lost three crab landmarks in a year and gained one. Here is the honest state of the steamed-crab map from the Maryland line to Dewey Beach.
Three crab rooms are gone from the twelve miles of Route 1 between the Maryland line and Rehoboth Bay. One new one opened in April. Here is the map as it stands this August, verified spot by spot.
Start with the losses, because they change where you turn off. The Fenwick Crab House at 100 Coastal Highway is marked permanently closed on review platforms this summer. It sat one block north of Ocean City and called itself home of the perfect crab cake. The family's mail-order crab cake operation carries on without the dining room. Up the block at 700 Coastal Highway, Ropewalk's bayside Fenwick location closed too. It signed off with a farewell post to its customers. In Bethany Beach the Blue Crab at 210 Garfield Parkway ended a 22-summer run after the 2025 season. Its all-you-can-eat crabs and Delaware fried chicken went with it. That left Bethany with one crab house until spring.
Fins Hospitality Group has run the Claws Seafood House on Rehoboth Avenue since 2006. It soft-opened a second Claws in the Blue Crab's old space on April 2, 2026. The format matches the original. Steamed blue crabs, all-you-can-eat specials, happy hour and beer from the group's own Big Oyster Brewery. The Rehoboth flagship has advertised all-you-can-eat crabs at $49.99 on its Facebook page. Town by town. Fenwick Island now has no steamed crabs at all. Its anchor is Harpoon Hanna's, the bayfront fish house open 365 days a year since 1983. The crab orders there are broiled crab cakes and cream of crab soup, with a boat dock and a sunset. South Bethany is a cottage town with no restaurant row. Its counter is South Bethany Seafood Market at 33260 Coastal Highway. The carryout market has sold steamed crabs, crab cakes and fresh fish since 1991. Prices move with the market. Bethany Beach is the strong stop. Mickey's Family Crab House has steamed on Jefferson Bridge Road since May 1990, and the new Claws sits on Garfield. Dewey Beach has one true crab house and one crab-cake bar. The Starboard's owners opened Starboard Claw on Memorial Day weekend 2023. It is the only room in town steaming blue crabs. Woody's at 1904 Coastal Highway has been the crab cake standard since 2009.
What the reviews actually say
Mickey's is the pick for the traditional dozen. It holds a 4.4 on Google across roughly 900 reviews, with decades-long regulars. Complaints describe front-of-house lapses rather than the crabs. Starboard Claw draws the warmest service notes on the stretch and a 4.4 of its own. Its one recurring failure is running out on peak nights, sometimes of the steamed crabs themselves. Woody's steams no crabs and still holds the best number, a 4.5 across roughly 2,700 Google reviews. Reviewers describe the jumbo lump crab cake over and over as nearly filler-free. The standing complaint is the summer wait for a small room. South Bethany Seafood Market rates 4.5 from a smaller crowd. That crowd praises freshness and grumbles about price. Harpoon Hanna's sits at 4.2 across nearly 6,000 reviews. Reviews split between the bay view and a kitchen some find inconsistent for the price. Claws Bethany is too new to have a record. Its Rehoboth parent carries the reputation for now.
Nobody on this stretch posts a fixed crab price and holds it. Mickey's prices by the market. The Claw's own menu warns of market volatility. The market in South Bethany prints that all prices follow availability. One Google reviewer's $147 dinner for two at Mickey's is the realistic benchmark for a full crab night in August.

One night: Mickey's for the dozen, early on a weekday. Two nights: add Starboard Claw. Call ahead to confirm crabs and book or arrive at 5. The crab cake day trip is Woody's at lunch, before the wait builds. Renting near the state park line? The South Bethany market steams to go. The day's price is a phone call away at (302) 537-1332. If the evening is about the water rather than the mallet, Harpoon Hanna's is the honest answer. Just know you are ordering a crab cake, not a pile. The season peaks now through October. The heavy No. 1 jimmies are worth asking for by name.
