Who has heavy crabs and what a dozen costs today

The Crab Bag grades its crabs like a produce stand

The 130th Street crab house prints a five-class sizing chart and quotes its dozens by phone. The recurring complaint is the bill, not the crabs.

The Crab Bag's 2026 menu prints its crab grades to the half inch. Mediums run 5.5 to 6 inches point to point. Larges run 6 to 6.5. Extra larges run 6.5 to 7, jumbos 7 to 7.5, colossals 7.5 and up. Most crab houses on the island will tell you what they are running if you ask. The Crab Bag prints the whole scale and not a single crab price beside it.

The catch changes daily, so the menu marks dozens and half-bushels as market priced and subject to availability. The day's quote comes from the carryout line at 410-250-3337. The all-you-can-eat steamed crabs come with corn on the cob and a firm no-sharing rule. They are subject to availability too. On a bad supply day the house pulls the option rather than steam you something small. Fixed prices apply to the dishes the kitchen controls. A jumbo lump crab cake runs 32.95 single and 59.95 double. Cream of crab soup is 13.95.

The room sits at 13005 Coastal Highway, at 130th Street in the thick of the north-end cluster. Higgins Crab House North is two blocks away and the Original Crabcake Factory ten. It opens seven days in season. Hours run 11 in the morning to 10 on weeknights and to midnight Friday through Sunday. A large carryout trade runs alongside the dining room. The town's own tourism site lists it as a 2026 Best of OC winner.

What the reviews actually say

The Crab Bag holds a 4.2 across roughly 4,450 Google reviews. For a volume crab house in a resort town that is strong. Reviewers describe crabs arriving hot and heavy for their grade. The fried seafood draws its own praise. "The seafood is amazing. Their breading is spot on," one reviewer wrote.

The recurring complaint is the bill. "Small portion McDonald's quality, overpriced," reads one blunt July 2022 review. One aggregator counts about 13 percent one-star ratings against 54 percent five-star. Most one-star reviews describe surprise at the market price rather than bad crabs. Colossals in August are a scarce commodity and priced like one.

Call the carryout line in the early afternoon. Ask what grades are running and what the dozen costs. Decide with numbers in hand. If larges are heavy, a dozen at the paper-covered table beats the all-you-can-eat math for two. If the quote is too high, the crab cake is the fixed-cost fallback and the reviews back it. August into September is the fat season on this coast. Few rooms in town let you order crabs by the half inch.
